Symptoms
Acute compartment syndrome
The most apparent sign in acute compartment syndrome is pain, which is intense and localised within the muscles of the affected compartment.
- The pain is more severe compared to the experienced trauma.
- Using the limb or performing stretching exercises increases the pain.
- Burning pain, sensory disturbances, and tingling may be present.
- The muscle feels more tense and full compared to the unaffected side.
- Complete loss of sensation and paralysis are late symptoms indicating permanent tissue damage.
*In acute compartment syndrome, the pain is continuous and also present at rest
Chronic compartment syndrome
Chronic compartment syndrome causes cramps and pain during physical activity.
Symptoms may also include:
- Sensory disturbances
- Difficulty in limb movement
- Significant increase in muscle volume
- Change in temperature compared to the unaffected limb
*In chronic compartment syndrome, symptoms are related to physical activity.
At rest, the pain subsides.
